Niugini Dive Adventures     Papua New Guinea

Handy Hints

Papua New Guinea lies just south of the equator, approximately 150 kilometres north of Australia.  The climate is generally warm with a 'wet' and 'dry' season, the timings of which vary from one part of the country to another.  The wettest months for most regions are November to March but rain falls mainly in the evenings and rarely disrupts daily activities.

Temperatures around the coastal areas are reasonably stable and vary between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius.  The Highlands are cooler and temperatures can fall dramatically at night.

Tourist Visa

All visitors to Papua New Guinea require a Tourist Visa which is valid for 30 days.  We recommend that you obtain a visa prior to arrival to ensure quick clearance through immigration.  You can obtain a visa on arrival for PGK 27.00 which must be purchased in PNG Kina. A money exchange desk is available in the customs hall.

Currency and Credit Cards

The unit of currency in PNG is the Kina which is divided into 100 Toea.  Most international currency travellers cheques, credit cards and cash are accepted in hotels and on board the MTS Discoverer.

Electricity

Papua New Guinea has 240 volts, 3 prong slanted points for electrical appliances.

What to bring

Travel light!  Lightweight clothing made of natural fibres will be more comfortable in the more humid coastal areas whilst a light sweater or jacket may be needed in Highlands at night.  Bring a plastic raincoat, comfortable walking shoes, sun hat and blockout, mosquito repellent, dark glasses, camera and lots of film. We recommednd that you bring along additional pair of walking shoes for shore excursions on the cruise and land tours.

If you are travelling on a charter flight then you will be required to restrict your luggage to 10kg per person.  Your main suitcase can be stored in Port Moresby for collection on return.  soft sided bags are ideal to travel with, also be prepared to stand on the scales yourself at some airports.

Accommodation & Hotels

In all cases, you will stay at the best hotels in each area.  Check-in times are generally noon.  Check-out time is 1000 hrs.  Unless otherwise stated on your itinerary, late check-out is at your expense.

Medical

Malaria seldom affects visitors to Papua New Guinea, but as a precaution it is very important to take a malaria suppressant.  Consult your physician.  As travel can take you to very remote areas, medical insurance cover is highly recommended, as evacuation to the nearest medical facility can incur extremely high transport costs.
